NIMH Crest

Description

It's the crest/insignia for the New Intelligence Martial High Command, or NIMH. Longterm watchers may recognize the logo as this old-ass deviation from 2007. But probably not, it's that obscure :iconforeveraloneplz:. So yeah, this is a logo I made ages ago (back in 2007, yup!) and I'll admit I swiped the laurel wreath from an SVG vector of the UN logo. Deal with it.

Aaaanyways, onto talking about NIMH! NIMH is a paramilitary force formed by the adepts - the artificially-evolved race of superhumans created as a byproduct of the D.A.S.H. Project back in the year GA 221 - apparently as a self-defense force/private military. It was originally formed to protect the adepts from discrimination and to maintain their economic and political independence (comparing my universe to Gundam SEED for a second, adepts are basically like coordinators and NIMH could be compared to ZAFT.) Though it was founded independently by the adepts, it has grown from a ragtag guerilla group to a multinational private military/political force, secretly funded by sympathizers in Britain and the United States (the D.A.S.H. Project took place at a research facility in the UK.)

However, their real role is to police the world and to hunt down/destroy any faction and/or ideology that seeks to completely wipe out another faction, ideology, race, or way of life. This makes them basically the world's largest vigilante organization, albeit with noble goals. Years of oppression and hatred directed at the adept race kinda filled them with a desire to destroy any and all destructive or genocidal organizations. "For a better future" is one of NIMH's main slogans, and the reason it does what it does.

But the shit really hit the fan when NIMH got more and more zealously-devoted to offing other organizations and individuals deemed "destructive." The destroyed region of the central United States - designated by the corrupt goverment as "Zone 36 Special Economic District" and informally called the Badlands - is rife with anti-adept sentiment, its inhabitants, the Badlanders, initially resenting the government for focusing on adept gene-splicing rather than recovery efforts but soon devolving into open racism against the adepts (derogatorily they call the adepts "lilies,") whom they falsely believe are responsible for the oppression they face.

Then, NIMH would face their most formidable enemy, the Holy Xandu Nation. The Nation is a militant, Abrahamic religious cult formed by resentful Badlanders who believe adepts to be a race of "devils" who will be exterminated by God's wrath and condemned to eternal Hell while the Badlanders, believed to be a chosen people, will be taken aboard a massive spacecraft called the "Nibiru Ark" and ascend into Heaven.

Needless to say this frightened the adepts, leading NIMH to take highly aggressive tactics against all Badlanders, seeing every last one of them as subhuman, self-righteous, religious extremist scum. This contrasts with NIMH's public image of providing the relief efforts to the Badlands that the corrupt US government neglects to do. Obviously, there are many in the Badlands who despise NIMH and see them as imperialistic fascists, fed by the adepts' inherent feelings of superiority to "regulars," or normal humans.
It is true that the adepts see themselves as a superior race, coming to a head when the adepts (and all of humanity) made contact with the Safhirim, a beautiful race of biomechanical angels. Admiring their tenacity in battle but still believing themselves a superior race to the Safhirim, NIMH began experimenting with Safhira DNA to create completely-obedient, cybernetic supersoldiers, capable of flight because the Safhirim have wings. Deploying these artificial life forms in battle had amazing results, with male Safhirim serving as ultra-elite supersoldiers, while females served as medics and non-combat pilots. NIMH treats artificial cyborg Safhirim more as military hardware than living soldiers, and details on their creation is strictly classified. Krystal Valentine (that's her adept name...she never had a Safhira name because she was created artificially) is a product of NIMH's experiments.
Again needless to say, NIMH is public enemy no. 1 to both the Badlanders and the US government...the 'Landers see them as oppressive devils, and the corrupted US government just doesn't like them because they're, well, adepts. NIMH is guilty of many human rights abuses, though such reports are biased because the adepts themselves are not considered human, and the world basically is out to get the adepts. Which is why NIMH exists!

I basically created NIMH as a big "fuck you" to everyone in the world who I hate, a personal revenge fantasy formed by my feelings of angst at how corrupt and decadent the world has become in the past 12 years, and how it's taken away my childhood innocence.

NIMH actually started (in the real world) as a fantasy militia I thought up when I was about ten, who would go around attacking polluters and people who harmed the environment. Now they're a darker, less immature and more disturbing look at my darker side and conflicting views on justice and righteousness. They are basically my idealized, private military force. Dash, my alter-ego, however, is too much of a free spirit to actively support or fight for NIMH, but several of his allies (most notably Krystal) are soldiers there.

Finally, the name "NIMH" is a reference to Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, a novel I enjoyed as a child, featuring superintelligent rats in the same way my NIMH features superintelligent adepts. In terms of ideology NIMH is sort of a cross between the Mobile Infantry from Starship Troopers (the warlike nature, the propaganda, the racial superiority of the humans (adepts in my case,) though unlike that movie it's played straight and isn't a satire) and HOLD/HOLY from the anime series s-CRY-ed (the labeling of people who live in a devastated part of the world as criminal scum, the uniforms (Krystal looks great in uniform, trust me,) the "refinement" of life forms (native alters in the anime, Safhirim in my universe) to create supersoldiers, and the unanimous contempt non-adepts have for the organization.) Also I guess ZAFT from Gundam SEED, and a much grittier and much less-heroic version of the UNSC from the Halo games (though the Safhirim supersoldiers were based on the SPARTAN program.) Initially they were based on the Old Republic from Star Wars but the way they've evolved they now more closely resemble the Galactic Empire!

Come to think of it, they're also sorta similar to COG from Gears of War.

Listened to this nonstop while writing..."Hell March" from CnC Red Alert could very well be NIMH's theme!

I hope you read this long-ass and probably boring description because I enjoyed writing it. I wrote this especially for EpsilonEagle who I know really likes looking at my stuff. You're awesome, Epsilon!
